Ivory Coast Forecasts 22% Increase in Raw Cashew Nut Production in 2023

June 22, 2023 – Adama Coulibaly, the CEO of the Raw Cotton and Cashew Nut Council of Ivory Coast, a country located in West Africa, has announced that the expected production of raw cashew nuts in Ivory Coast in 2023 will increase by 22% to a record level of 1.25 million tons due to favorable weather conditions and the effectiveness of new cashew varieties.

Higher-than-Expected Increase in Raw Cashew Nut Production

Previously, forecasts projected an increase in production compared to 1.028 million tons in the previous year, with an estimated 1.05 million tons for 2023. However, Adama Coulibaly told reporters, “To date, the number of raw cashew nuts that processors in Ivory Coast have kept for processing is estimated to be around 100,000 tons of inventory from last year as of June 21, 2023. With the inventory and approximately 1.15 million tons already purchased from farmers, the expected production will reach 1.25 million tons.”

Furthermore, Adama Coulibaly also mentioned that this year, cashew nut traders from neighboring countries such as Guinea, Mali, and Ghana have been bringing their products to Ivory Coast as they believe this market is more profitable than in their own countries. “This is troubling for us because the quality is not the same, which poses a risk to our reputation,” he said.

Enhanced Export and Cashew Nut Processing

Adama Coulibaly stated that compared to 455,315 tons in the same period of the previous year, exports to Vietnam and India have increased to 593,000 tons, thanks to the collaboration of various parties to boost cashew nut exports in the country. Additionally, Coulibaly mentioned that officials are working to increase local cashew nut processing, and four cashew industrial zones are being constructed in the northern and central regions of the country to enhance processing capacity in the coming months.
